Spacious, comfortable and aesthetically graphic: with the introduction of chair 860 Thonet presents a new piece of lounge furniture which adopts a recurring motif of the radii within triangles to distinguish its stylish wooden frame. The individual struts at each side angle towards each other as though reaching for a distant vanishing point, ensuring an immediately recognisable character to the design. The deeply comfortable seat and back cushions of the chair offer a soft and inviting contrast to the precise contours of the frame, creating a dynamic geometry.

The gentle tilt of the seat and back rest is designed to facilitate a pleasingly restful seated posture. For the concept of this new chair, designer Lydia Brodde found inspiration within the comprehensive Thonet archives.

“I was especially fascinated with the designs from the 1960s and their clear, geometric forms. I wanted to translate these elements into a new timelessness,” she explains. A chair that is suitable for any environment, model 860 can be individualised according to personal tastes. The wooden frame is available with or without armrests. Furthermore, an additional footstool to match the chair guarantees maximum relaxation value.

Customers can select from a wide range of high quality fabric and leather options for the upholstered elements, while the frame is available in oiled, lacquered or stained ash or in either oiled or lacquered walnut, or oak. With its combination of warm wood, clean lines and high levels of comfort, chair 860 is ideal for the domestic living room; at the same time it proposes both practicality and a chic residential flair for public lounge and waiting areas. The design can be configured in groups to offer the perfect place for informal meetings.

Chair 860, along with all the new products at the Milan furniture fair - chair 808, bentwood sofa 2002 and the seating programme ranges S 650 and S 830 - represents a significant extension to Thonet’s product portfolio for lounge applications, and is the first wooden arm chair in this segment.
