Through a special slitting process, coach hide can be expanded; thus, its feature of being an "organic" material is enriched by the further quality of becoming matter that can naturally create "dynamism". Enclosed in a frame, it forms a niche. If opened on 2 sides, it develops in a linear manner.

A further evolution of the "open" coach hide mesh is given by the "Loomy" screen designed by FRANCO POLI for MATTEOGRASSI.

In this project, two full-thickness coach hide surfaces are cross-matched in proximity of the two open sides. Two elliptical metal shapes hold the coach hide in place along the two closed sides, sliding along 2 metal struts that act as runners and as tie rods for the coach hide mesh along the sides. The result is a "three-dimensional" self-supporting partition achieved through the tension obtained between frame and surface as well as through the dramatic interplay between masses and voids.

A peculiar feature of the Loomy screen is the interplay between lines, areas and masses. Each different perspective, both in detail and as a whole, leads to the discovery of interesting, new shapes and transparencies through ever-changing "moir" effects.

The LOOMY screen is a slender partition that helps create separate areas in the home without obstructing the view. It is also suited for shop windows or to decorate an office with a fairly casual look.
