Rangoli was initially created as part our installation "Myth and Material" that traveled to Paris and New York. With an irreverent and spontaneous use of color and materials, Doshi Levien's installation explored the influence of Indian visual culture on their work. "Myth and Material" explored the plurality of contemporary India and the co-existence of opposites; the sensual with the spiritual, celebration and austerity, function and fantasy.

For "Myth and Material" We created 9 Rangoli patterns as rugs using layers of bright colored felt. In India, Rangoli patterns are usually made from colored sand or rice powder and they are made outside homes to welcome visitors on auspicious occasions or during festivals. Following the success and popularity of the designs that were only intended for the installation, we developed three of the designs for production, using hand tufted wool.
